Security Update Fix

Did Apple's Security Update 2006-003 hose your Mac to the point where all you see is a spinning beach ball of doom (also known as the pizza of doom)? Well you're not alone. Fortunately theres an easy fix for this.

  1. Reboot your Mac.
  2. Hold down the shift key to boot OSX into "safe mode". This stops all startup items from launching.
  3. Once you're in OSX go to: HardDisk > Library > StartupItems. This is NOT the same as your user directory. Be sure to start from your Hard disk first then traverse to your Library and StartupItems folder.
  4. Most likely you'll have Adobe Version Cue installed if you have any Adobe products installed on your Mac. Move this out of your StartupItems folder and onto the Desktop. If you don't see Adobe Version Cue then there is most likely something else in your StartupItems folder causing the problem. Remove the items one by one and reboot to figure out which is causing it.
    1. Not sure if Adobe will fix this soon or not so I guess no Version Cue for now!

Fortune: Mac on PC Push

Fortune magazine chimes in about Parallels, the company that has brought us the software that allows Intel Macs to run Windows software without having to reboot.

Turns out Parallels isn't such a small company after all. They were bought out three years ago by virtualization company SWSoft:
"SWsoft and its Parallels subsidiary are both Russian-American operations. SWsoft CEO Serguei Beloussov, based in Virginia, calls the shots for programmers who are based in Moscow. Parallels employed only seven when SWsoft bought it, but today has 100 people, mostly in Russian R&D."

The article goes on to quote Michael Dell who is still wondering if Jobs will allow OSX to run on regular PC's sold by other companies as well as license it.

An interesting read: Windows on the Mac changes everything

Also of note, Balda is rumored to be the manufacturer of the touch-screens according to PlastEurope's webpage.

Scorecard:
CPU: Marvell
Flash Memory: Intel
Touch-screen: Balda

Mac OS X Server, Firewall and ftp problems... and a solution

Recently, I turned on the firewall on a clients OS X Server 10.4 installation because there were many attempts to hack into it. I went through and configured the firewall so that any necessary ports were open, and walked away thinking all was well.

Well it wasn't. There were a few clients who couldn't connect via ftp or ftp took a long time to respond after connecting. I realize that ftp is an insecure way of transmitting information, but this client had his hands tied since many of his users don't have an sftp client.

After a bit of troubleshooting, I discovered that the reason the clients were having a hard time connecting to the ftp server: You need to open more than ports 20 and 21 for ftp to work through a firewall.

So what did we do to make things work again? Read more after the cut.

Apple Introduces new Mac Pro 8-Core

macpro-8core.jpg

Almost an entire week ahead of the MacWorld Keynote, Apple today introduced the new MacPro 8-core. Featuring Intel's new 45 nanometer Quad-Core "Harpertown" Xeon processors running up to 3.2 GHz the new MacPro is the fastest Mac ever. Throw in the powerful new graphics and up to 4TB of internal storage and you've got one fantastic work horse!

They all come standard with 8 cores, starting from 2.8 Ghz and going all the way up to 3.2 Ghz. Other than the CPU which is a "Harpertown" processor most of the other features seem to be the same. Also interesting to note is that the front side bus clocks in at 1600 Mhz with 64-bit dual independent frontside buses.

In the graphics department, the Mac Pros don't fail to innovate with a Double-wide, 16-lane PCI Express 2.0 graphics slot and one of the following installed:

  • ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT with 256MB of GDDR3 memory and two dual-link DVI ports
  • NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT with 512MB of GDDR3 memory and two dual-link DVI ports
  • NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT with 512MB of GDDR3 memory and two dual-link DVI ports
  • NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 with 1.5GB of GDDR3 memory, two dual-link DVI ports, and one stereo 3D port

For those of you who have been waiting for the new machines to come out, this looks to be the machine to get. More news as it comes

Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing says:
“The new Mac Pro is the fastest Mac we’ve ever made. With 3.2 GHz 8-core Xeon processing, a 1600 MHz front side bus and 800 MHz memory, the new Mac Pro uses the fastest Intel Xeon architecture on the market.”

Standard MacPro 8-core configuration:
retail price of $2,799 (US)

  • two 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors with dual-independent 1600 MHz front side buses
  • 2GB of 800 MHz DDR2 ECC fully-buffered DIMM memory, expandable up to 32GB
  • ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT with 256MB of GDDR3 memory
  • 320GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive running at 7200 rpm
  • 16x SuperDrive™ with double-layer support (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
  • two PCI Express 2.0 slots and two PCI Express slots
  • Bluetooth 2.0+EDR; and
  • Apple Keyboard and Mighty Mouse.

Of course you have a ton of build to order options as well at the Apple Store!
