iMac Receives a Minor Speed Bump

Apple today refreshed its iMac line of computers bumping speeds up to 3.06GHz.

From the press release: "Apple today updated its all-in-one iMac line with the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors and the most powerful graphics ever available in an iMac. With prices starting at just $1,199, iMac includes faster processors with 6MB L2 cache and a faster 1066 MHz front-side bus across the entire line, and 2GB of memory standard in most models. The 24-inch iMac now offers a 3.06 GHz Intel processor and the high-performance NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS graphics as options, extending iMac's lead as the ultimate all-in-one desktop computer for both consumers and professionals."

Apple Update Brings Java SE 6 Support to Leopard

Yesterday, in an unannounced software update, Apple added Java 6 support to Leopard via virtual machine.

The update which adds support for the Java 6 Standard Edition (SE) comes with Java SE 6 version 1.6.0_05. Of interesting note, the update will leave Java 5 alone, and won't actually change the default version of Java to Java 6, but Leopard owners should be able to run Java 6 apps.

The only downside to this update is that Java SE 6 can only be installed on 64-bit Intel Macs, so Core Duo or PowerPC processor machines are out of luck.

One last thing, you'll also need to be running the latest version of Leopard, 10.5.2, in order to install the new(ish) Java hotness. The update is 57MB in size, and is available via the software update feature.
