Open Source and FREE Must Have Mac Applications

Okay so I already covered some cool Mac Applications that I use and like but some of you wanted some cheaper alternatives... meaning FREE or Open Source. So here's a compiled list of some really great Mac Free / Open Source software to check out. All 25 of them! If you know of any other great one's feel free to comment here!

Internet Applications

ViennaVienna The folks who brought us one of the best freeware newsreader for the mac have just launched version 2! Vienna allows you to subscribe to Atom/RSS news feeds and podcasts using a simple interface with everyones featured flavor of the moment: tabbed browsing. There's also blogging integration, three separate reading layouts and a lot more! Download Vienna here.

FirefoxFireFox 2 Probably the best all around browser. Some might disagree but I really do like FireFox 2! So many cool features like reopening your windows to where you left off and a slew of plugins to extend it. Get FireFox 2 now!

ShiiraShiira Shiira is a web browser written in Cocoa. Since this is the same rendering engine used by Safari, HTML content rendered by Shiira will look the same as in Apple's own browser. The goal of the Shiira Project is to create a browser that is better and more useful than Safari. This browser is pretty nifty if you like eyecandy! CyberduckCyberduck Cyberduck is an open source FTP and SFTP (SSH Secure File Transfer) browser that is constantly being updated and refined by it's author David V. Kocher. It's really come a long way since I first started using it. Universal Binary. Download Cyberduck here.

ItermiTerm If you're tired of Apple's Terminal or just want more flexibility such as tabbed windows, and transparent windows look no further. iTerm is a full featured terminal emulation program written for OS X using Cocoa with complete VT100 emulation. Download iTerm here.

Google Stuff

GcalGCal This is a one trick pony but sometimes thats just the thing you need. For those of you who have migrated away from iCal and over to Google Calendar this might be just what you need. GCal is a Google Calendar Client that ONLY displays the Google Calendar and nothing else. Get GCal here.

GooglenotifieerGoogle Notifier for Mac The Google Notifier is an application that shows you alerts in your menu bar, so you can see when you have new Gmail messages or upcoming Google Calendar events without having to open a web browser. I use this everyday since I want an audible sound when new mail hits my Gmail account or if an event is about to take place in my Google Calendar. Also good if you have 2 Gmail accounts. Disc Burning

LiquidcdLiquidCD LiquidCD is a freeware for burning CDs and DVDs built for Mac OS X. It also does data backup and allows you to make picture discs. Get LiquidCD here.

Graphics and Design

InkscapeInkScape Inkscape is an Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, Freehand, CorelDraw, or Xara X. If you can't afford to get Illustrator, why not give this app a try? Get InkScape here.

FontexplorerLinotype FontExplorer X This is so good I can't believe it's free! FontExplorer X is a font management software that allows you to group your fonts and add them as you need them. MaxMax I had a problem with some FLAC audio files someone gave me. Nothing could play these files until I found Max. Max converts audio into 20 formats including: MP3, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, AAC, Apple Lossless, Monkey's Audio, WavPack, Speex, AIFF, and WAVE. Get Max here.
